The Clavilux 2000 is an interactive instrument for generative music visualization, which is able to generate a live visualization of any music played on a digital piano. The setting of the installation consists of three parts: A digital piano with 88 keys and midi output, a computer running a vvvv patch and a vertical projection above the keyboard.

For every note played on the keyboard a new visual element appears in form of a stripe, which follows in its dimensions, position and speed the way the particular key was stroke. Colours give the viewer and listener an impression of the harmonic relations: Each key has it’s own color scheme and « wrong » notes stand out in contrasting colors.

All stripes stay and overlap each other in an additive way, so at the end a kind of pattern remains – a summary of the music – which will be always unique since the notes of the composition aswell as the interpretation of the piano player are influencing the outcome. Furthermore the piano player can switch between the standart 2d view and an additional 3d view of the visualization while playing.

Digital guitar VS Electric guitar – The difference ?
I am obsessed with digital guitar. But I also love electric guitar, and I have learned what it’s good at and what it’s capable of. Some of its most important qualities and characteristics stem from the very fact that the electric guitar is made out of wood and strings. A guitar string is « beautiful » – because the sound generated comes from the very vibration of the string, interfering with a magnetic flux and inducing an electric voltage, which is then amplified. Why would you want to emulate that? It is perfection. It is pure nature. It is in the analog domain. I did not intend the Misa digital guitar to replicate a traditional guitar.

The reason for the Misa Digital Guitar
Guitars by their very nature have limitations. To create sound you need to hit a string, so that the sound at its most intense point is always the beginning of the pluck. The left hand controls what notes to play, and the right hand controls when to play these notes and the intensity of the notes. Effects can be inserted into the signal chain, but they are usually foot pedals which makes the experience of controlling effects disjointed from what your hands are doing. Plus, you can only really make use of one pedal at a time. Even in the (rare) case that controls are mounted on the guitar, the hand needs to switch between strings and controls. This may be okay if you only use effects occasionally, but when every note you play needs the controls set differently – good luck with that. Electronic music cannot be played effectively with such constraints. In electronic music, the timbre (or colour) of the sound can be morphed in an infinite number of ways. For a guitar to accommodate this, the right hand needs more control than just plucking strings. You need to be able to control elements of the sound, such as sustain, pitch, filter cutoffs, contour or any other synthesizer parameter, in a way that has no physical constraints. This was my thought process when designing the Misa digital guitar. There are no strings on this instrument. The right hand doesn’t pluck strings, it controls sound. So don’t compare Misa digital guitars to acoustic guitars or electric guitars. Those are different instruments, for different artforms, for different music. This is electronic music.

The Misa Digital Guitar
My design aim was for a minimalistic interface, with configurability at the sound module end, leaving the instrument itself simple and effective. That being said, the Misa digital guitar software is open source, and powered by the Linux operating system. This means programmers have the flexibility to modify how it works, and even change the interface to provide specific functionality. This is important because collaboration from the users themselves, experimenting and innovating in their own ways, will further improve the instrument. The Misa digital guitar is a MIDI controller. It must be plugged into a MIDI capable sound module. The sound of this instrument is limited only by what you connect to it.

The Touchtable is an innovative personal music player that has been designed to involve creativity of interaction into the act of enjoying music through a large controller wheel that surrounds the screen. The user can control a track by precise positioning, timing and pitch manipulation through this touch and pressure sensitive turntable. The user can mix records by pressing the function button that switches the player simultaneously to a secondary track. The cue creates a combined output to the main phono by directing each track either to the right or the left headphone, then creating a cue point by matching the beat and pitch. The wireless combination of two Touchtables not only acts like a traditional DJ set up, but also allows multiple users to scratch and mix tracks together. The Touchtable will become a midi device when plugged in a computer and works with its built-in software, allowing complete control over customization and music producingcreativity of the users. Monday Morning is a fully- fledged acoustic guitar, which can be transformed into a small and compact package. With this special feature, it is no longer a problem to take the guitar wherever you want to go. In its packed situation, the guitar has the size of a handbag. The two body parts are made out of liquid wood, which can be processed by injection molding. As a result of this, the guitar has resistant characteristics against climate changes, e.g. changes in temperature or humidity.

The acoustic violin form in the baroque style exists for over 500 years. There has been very little change to it. This design creates a new modern form, moving away from the baroque style. Key aspects such as sound criteria, analogies, sledge, boat and corset as well as feminine curves of a woman gave rise to the design of  the Gavari violin. It was a challenge to create a new modern form for the 21th century, maybe they will change the classical music busines. 4/4 Violin, semiacoustic
